The Adobros x HCCS
Join us for a special fundraising pop-up at Hackney Chinese community services
Part of Celestial Peach’s ‘Taste of Home’ dining club series, I will be putting on a menu of classic Tsinoy dishes that draws upon a millenium of cultural and culinary crossovers between Filipinos and Chinese – as well as my own upbringing in Hong Kong!
Chinese traders first arrived in the Philippines over a thousand years ago, but it was only really during the Spanish colonial era that they settled in their thousands, bringing various cooking techniques, dishes and ingredients and marrying them (often quite literally) with local Filipino cuisine. From this has sprung up some of the Philippines’ most-loved dishes, like lumpia (spring rolls), pancit (noodles) and humba (stewed pork belly), to name but a few – all with distant Chinese origins, but now wholly embraced and indigenised into the Filipino repertoire.
A significant portion of the proceeds will go to the Hackney Chinese Community Services, helping with the fundraising to expand their community centre and the services they offer for the local East/Southeast Asian (ESEA) community.

Can I bring my own alcohol or other drinks?
You most certainly can!
If you’re thinking about alcohol matches: a lot of Filipino food is eaten with ice-cold Asian light lagers or, if you’re that way inclined, rum/gin/brandy-based drinks, so you can’t go much wrong there; as for wine, looking at the dishes on the menu - which include seafood and braised pork - I’d (inexpertly) recommend a white wine on the drier side of things.
Apart from vegan, will you be catering for any other dietary requirements?
Unfortunately given the nature of this event, it will be difficult to accommodate other dietary requirements. That being said, the menu is completely dairy-free, and the only gluten will be in the lumpia wrappers (and trace elements in the soy sauce) - please feel free to enquire further when you make your booking!
Will you have any COVID-19 measures in place?
I (and others on the team) will be wearing masks, as some of us have high-risk family members and so are taking precautions accordingly - although not mandatory, if you could wear a mask whilst not at your table, that would be much-appreciated! Additionally, the dining area is a big room, and where possible we will be opening windows and doors to aid with ventilation.
If you are experiencing any symptoms, we’d kindly ask that you let us know as soon as possible and not attend, and we will look at re-selling or refunding your seat as per our cancellation policy.
What is your cancellation policy?
Cancellations up to 1 week in advance of the dinner (i.e. by Sunday 12th September) will be refundable; any cancellations after that will be refundable only if we are able to re-sell your seat to our waiting list. If you do not show without letting us know in advance, we unfortunately will not be able to refund your seat.
